The Torabhaig Tale

The Sound of Sleat stretches beyond the converted steading like a silver thread binding Skye to the mainland, its waters catching the light that filters through Highland clouds. Here at Teangue, on the gentle southern peninsula of Sleat, stone walls that once sheltered cattle now house copper stills, their gleaming forms rising where hay bales once filled the rafters.

When Mossburn Distillers chose this nineteenth-century farm building in 2017, they weren't just selecting a location—they were awakening a sleeping giant. For nearly two centuries, Talisker had stood alone as Skye's sole whisky maker, its northern stronghold commanding the island's liquid reputation. But the southern reaches of Sleat, with their softer contours and maritime embrace, whispered of different possibilities.

The Allt Gleann stream descends from the hills above, its voice a constant presence in the stillhouse. This water carries the essence of Skye's ancient geology—gneiss and granite worn smooth by millennia of Highland weather. It arrives at Torabhaig already knowing its purpose, having learned the island's secrets during its journey from source to still.

Inside the converted steading, peat smoke mingles with the sweet breath of fermentation. The building's thick stone walls, weathered by decades of Hebridean storms, now contain a different kind of alchemy. Where Victorian farmers once stored their harvest, modern distillers tend to washbacks and stills, the rhythm of production replacing the seasonal pulse of agriculture.

The capacity—four hundred thousand litres annually—speaks to measured ambition rather than industrial scale. This is whisky-making that honors both tradition and place, each drop carrying the maritime character that defines island malts. The Sound of Sleat provides more than a view; it seasons the air with salt and seaweed, elements that will find their way into every cask.

As the newest voice in Skye's whisky chorus, Torabhaig represents both continuation and innovation. The island's whisky story, once singular, now unfolds in harmony—northern and southern expressions of the same wild, beautiful land where sea meets sky in endless conversation.
