The Lagg Tale
At the southern tip of Arran, where the island's gentle shoulders give way to rugged coastline, the newest chapter in Scottish whisky began writing itself in 2019. Here in Kilmory, where ancient Gaelic voices once carried across the water, Isle of Arran Distillers planted their second flag—not in conquest, but in completion.
The architects understood their assignment. This wasn't just another distillery; it was Arran's shadow self, the dark twin to Lochranza's bright northern spirit. Where the older distillery danced with delicate island character, Lagg would wrestle with peat smoke and maritime fury. The building rises from the landscape like it grew there, award-winning design married to Highland practicality.
Torlin Water—Uisge Soluis in the old tongue—flows down from the hills carrying the island's ancient secrets. This isn't just H2O in a pipe; it's the liquid memory of Arran itself, filtered through peat and granite, softened by Highland rain. The water that built civilizations now builds whisky, one drop at a time.
Inside the stillhouse, copper gleams with purpose. Every decision here serves the peat—from mash tun to spirit safe, each vessel calibrated for one obsession: heavily peated single malt that tastes like the sea wind and smells like Highland bonfires. The capacity reads 750,000 litres annually, but numbers tell only half the story. This is about intention, about Isle of Arran Distillers completing a vision decades in the making.
The peat smoke rises from Lagg's chimneys like incense, carrying prayers to the whisky gods. Below, in the darkness of future warehouses, casks sleep and dream of becoming something magnificent. The island that once exported nothing but sheep and stories now sends its liquid poetry across the world.
Stand in this stillhouse and feel the island's pulse beneath your feet. Arran finally has its voice in both major keys—Lochranza's bright song and Lagg's smoky whisper. The conversation between them will echo across decades, each distillery pushing the other toward greatness.
The tale is just beginning.
