The Gakkogawa Tale
In the shadow of Mt. Chokai, where the sacred mountain meets the Sea of Japan, Junpei Sato made a choice that would bridge centuries of tradition. The year 2021 marked not just the founding of Gakkogawa Distillery, but the moment when five generations of sake brewing wisdom turned toward whisky.
Here in Yuza-cho, Yamagata Prefecture, the Gekko River carries the mountain's gift downward—ultra-soft water filtered through Chokaisan's subsoil, the same source that had blessed Tatenokawa Sake Brewery for generations. What once nurtured rice into sake would now coax barley into whisky, the water's mineral-light character becoming the foundation stone of something entirely new.
The distillery rises from land where Sato's family had already perfected the art of fermentation through their Tatenokawa Shuzo and Owajiman sake houses. But October 2023 brought the first whisper of steam from copper stills, marking the true beginning of whisky production. The transition required no abandonment of principle—only adaptation. The Japanese concept of monozukuri, the relentless pursuit of craftsmanship perfection, flowed seamlessly from sake vessels to whisky stills.
In this coastal corner of Shonai, where mountain minerals meet maritime air, Sato envisioned something distinct: a "Shonai whisky" that would speak of its terroir as clearly as any Burgundian wine. The ultra-soft Chokaisan water, stripped of harsh minerals by its underground journey, promised the clean elegance that would become Gakkogawa's signature—a delicate fruitiness emerging from the marriage of Scottish tradition and Japanese precision.
The World Whisky Awards recognized this vision in 2024, granting silver to Gakkogawa's newmake spirit—an early validation of choices made in stillhouse and fermentation room. Each drop carries the DNA of its place: the mountain's purity, the river's journey, and generations of brewing knowledge distilled into new purpose.
Standing where Mt. Chokai's snow-fed streams begin their descent to the sea, Gakkogawa represents more than geographical positioning. It embodies the Japanese whisky maker's eternal pursuit—honoring tradition while creating something unmistakably local, one careful distillation at a time.
